LESSON 1 OF 2 · Data & reporting

Clean the data without hiding problems

Prepare five valid records and keep a clear correction trail.

1. Before you start: You can read a small table. Use this browser; Excel is optional.

Allow about 18 minutes for reading and practice.

2. Why it matters

A tidy table can still contain the wrong records. Keep the source and explain every change.

3. Worked example

Cedar and Birch are fictional workshop teams. Their September files contain six records.

The ID “ 0001 ” has outer spaces. Trim the spaces and keep the ID as text.

Record 0003 says “check”. This is an unresolved value, not zero.

Two Birch rows repeat 0005. The fictional source note confirms one duplicate and gives 0003 as 100 minutes.

After those confirmed corrections: Cedar has 3 records / 300 minutes; Birch has 2 / 200.

4. Guided practice

  1. Inspect all six original rows in the practice table.
  2. Select Trim outer spaces. Check that 0001 keeps its zeroes.
  3. Open the source correction note before changing records.
  4. Apply the confirmed correction. Check the five remaining records.
  5. Compare the row count and total with the independent controls.

Opening your practice…

5. Try it yourself

Prepare the September detail for review. Use the table and controls to explain what changed.

Use the fictional scenario only. State what your evidence proves and what still needs a check.

Review these success criteria

These are your review notes. They are not a scored test.

SOMETHING TO KEEP

6. Your useful output

Download your current detail CSV and correction record. The correction record states whether checks remain open.

Practice completion: not marked complete

Current detail: 6 records; total unresolved; 1 unresolved value; 1 duplicate row; outer spaces remain.
Expected controls: 5 records / 500 minutes; Cedar 3 / 300; Birch 2 / 200.
Trim rule: not applied. Confirmed correction: not applied.
Source note: 0003 confirmed as 100; the final 0005 is a duplicate. Original source is retained in the lesson.

Your explanation and next action:
Not recorded yet.

Success criteria reviewed:
[ ] Five records remain, with no unresolved value or repeated ID.
[ ] The total is 500 minutes.
[ ] 0001 is still a text ID with four characters.
[ ] The original six rows and the correction note remain available.

Next step: Next, group the records and prove that a refresh includes the new month.

CSV viewers can convert text IDs to numbers. Import RecordID as text to preserve zeroes. Keep the review record with the file.

7. Common mistakes and recovery

Replacing “check” with zero changes the total without evidence.

Keep the exception visible. Use the supplied source note to resolve it.

Converting an ID to a number removes leading zeroes.

Return to the original text. Trim spaces before assigning data types.

Removing a repeated row without checking can discard real work.

Compare the key and source evidence. Apply only the confirmed correction.

8. Optional self-check

Skip this if you prefer. It never affects your practical completion.

Why keep the original six rows?

9. Your next step

Next, group the records and prove that a refresh includes the new month.

Mark completion when your practical work is ready. You do not need to take the check.

Pilot progress and drafts save in this browser. Optional check answers are stored separately.

Saving and privacy

Use fictional details only. Nothing from these pilots is sent to a service.

This browser storage is separate from existing course recovery codes. Clearing site data, private browsing or changing device can lose it. Preview and public site storage are separate.

Download useful outputs before leaving. Use one tab per lesson. A progress copy is a readable record; this preview does not import it.
